Canadian Immigration Family Sponsorship

Submitted by admin-editor on 24 June 2024

Family reunification is a cornerstone of Canada's immigration policy. The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) oversees this program, enabling Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor family members for immigration. The primary objective is to facilitate the reunion of families, support humanitarian efforts, and bolster the economy.

Key Aspects of Family Sponsorship

Types of Family Members Eligible for Sponsorship:

  • Spouses, common-law partners, and conjugal partners
  • Dependent children

  • Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • At least 18 years old
  • Must meet income requirements to support the sponsored family member
  • Must sign a Sponsorship Agreement and an Undertaking to provide financial support for the sponsored person

Income Requirements:

Sponsors must meet or exceed the Low Income Cut-off (LICO) if they are sponsoring a spouse with dependent children, dependent children with children, or parents and grandparents. Quebec residents must meet additional provincial requirements.

  • Dependent child (under 22): 10 years or until 25 years old

Conclusion

Canada's Family Sponsorship Program is a robust pathway for reuniting families, supporting them financially, and ensuring their integration into Canadian society. Sponsors must be prepared to commit to the financial support and well-being of their family members for a specified period, as determined by the IRCC.
